Lolita’s care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko’s reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the sea.
The people who are Lolita’s captors – the Dolphin Company – have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative and plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington’s west coast where she could stay for the duration of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita’s release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O’Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita’s Diet
A balanced diet is essential for the health of a gold and blue macaw. They require premium food, as well as lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity could live up to 60 years old. This magnificent bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.
A blue and gold macaw can be a charming friend but is also extremely intelligent. They are renowned for their ability to learn new tricks and vocabulary quickly. This bird is a great choice for those who are just beginning their journey to avian companionship.
This bird is also very social and can easily bond with her family members. Macaws of gold and blue often make loud vocalizations that include “flock calls,” which is part of their normal behavior. They may even chew and squabble at times particularly when they are bored or frustrated. This type of behavior is expected by prospective pet owners.
The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita’s health and status but there are still questions. Some experts, such as Akromas who was the one who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have voiced concerns about her diet. According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds of salmon per day, in addition to capelin, herring, and squid.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been criticised for the quality of the food they feed killer whales. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some consider too small for her.
Lolita’s Health
While her beauty is evident, Lolita’s health continues to get worse. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see her released back into the wild. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for a long time. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that left her in a fragile condition.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita’s condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is aging quickly and that her health has deteriorated.
Since her captor doesn’t need to reveal this information, it’s unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an important factor in the death of orcas in captivity.
Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita, many people believe that she could be closer than ever to a wild life. Seaquarium’s new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to move the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
